For the 1998 season, the Los Angeles Legends became the Florida Legends, and the team was relocated to be part of the new Eastern Division of the Ladies Professional Baseball League. They based themselves at the Homestead Sports Complex, south of Miami, and began a 3-week intensive training camp. 17 players were housed in a ranch-style pink dormatory, dubbed the Pink Palace. Most of the players were new to the team - only 2 relocated with the organization to Florida. Others stayed behind, or joined the Long Beach Aces.
In April, 220 women tried out, with 9 making the team, including a few players from Japan. Their manager, Bridgette Wold-Satriano, was still the only female manager in the league. "I really feel like this is a new era for women," Wold-Satriano said. "This isn't for the 30- or 40-year-olds out there today. This is for the next generation of little girls, so they'll have something to work for."
On July 9th, they played the season opener in New Jersey at one of the new expansion teams, the New Jersey Diamonds, winning 13-9. After four games against the Diamonds, they returned for a home-opener against the second expansion team, the Buffalo Nighthawks. By July 13th they had a record of 2 wins and 3 losses, though at their home-opener they only had dozens of fans in attendance.
After this, they then had another series against the Diamonds. In the first game, only 20-25 fans showed up. Later, for family night with fireworks, around 60 fans were in the stands. And then after 16 games, the season was ended prematurely. There was plans for the Legends to continue practicing before a potential road trip to Japan.
