Highlighting the roster of the 1997 Phoenix Spitfires was Victoria Ruelas, who back in 1989 had become the first girl to play in a Little League World Series game. But also on the team was Alex Sickinger, star catcher, who was voted LLB rookie of the year in 1997.
The Spitfires played their games at San Jose Municipal Stadium, and had a strong year. By August 29th, they had a record of 21 wins and 6 losses. By the end of the season they had reached the first LLB World Series, where they faced off against the Los Angeles Legends in a best of five series, starting on September 4th 1997. The San Jose Spitfires swept the series in three games, and became the first (and only) LLB World Series champions. P.J. Brun was named co-Most Valuable Player for the league (sharing it with the Ace's Gina Satriano).
